Abstract
Meta-analysis was conducted on 93 papers published before February 2014 in Korea to systematically integrate factors of successful aging in Korean elders. Standardized average effect sizes were computed for each factor and their group variables. Results presented the largest average effect size for the psychological variables and medium average effect size for the social variables, physical health and cognitive function factors, and the residual variables. Demographic variables showed the smallest average effect sizes. Average effect sizes were then computed for each individual factor. Among demographic variables that showed the smallest average effect size, economic status showed the largest effect size followed by religion, education, marital status, age, and generation. Among physical health and cognitive function variables, cognitive function, lifestyle, physical status, physical function, cognitive strategy, and number of diseases showed medium amount of effect sizes. Among psychological variables that showed the largest average effect sizes, transcendence, purpose of life, self-efficacy/self-esteem, wisdom, psychological well-being, coping strategy, and depression/ loneliness showed large amount of average effect sizes; aging anxiety, attitude toward aging, resilience, death preparation, stress, and grateful disposition showed medium amount of average effect sizes. Among social variables, family function and family support displayed large average effect sizes; relation with children, local living environment, social support, activities related to friendship, family, leasure, volunteering, and payroll, along with relationship with spouse and brothers/sisters showed medium amount of average effect sizes. Among the residual variables, preparing retirement and discrimination showed medium average effect sizes. Implications and limitations are discussed.
